[GreenKeys] Model 15 Typebar replacement

I need to replace a few typebars on the TG-7... somebody modified it by
putting in fractions and (of all things) a Maltese Cross on the upper case
letter C. Need to get it back to TG-7 (mostly).
Paul Cembura (mr_rtty at pacbell.net) has the typebars with pallets.
I have gently tried to remove the individual typebars by pulling up on the
pull bars, but no luck.
Against my better judgement (and against Paul's advice) I loosened, ever so
slightly, the 2 screws holding the curved rod against which the typebars
pivot. Sure enough a bunch of pullbars disengaged from their individual
typebar gears and dropped down. But I was able to remove a typebar. It took
a bit of a learning curve to figure out how to re-engage the typebars with
the loose pullbars, but I did it.
I tightened up the rod again, snug in place. Everything back to normal.
If you manually extend the pullbars as far as possible, the typebars should
come out, but they are stopped by the ribbon guide/oscillator. So the next
logical step is: remove the ribbon guide to let the typebars pivot further
to disengage from the pullbar gear.
Is that the answer, or is there some other black magic that I haven't
discovered?
Many thanks!
