There was, and hopefully still is, a device that John Nagle recommended (from Silicon Labs) that handles the drop down to 45 baud from a much higher baud rate.  I wound up with for or five of them, so I’m set for life I hope!

I have found that some of those “dongles” work better than others. Ones with the prolific PL2303 chipset work better.  But in the past few years I’ve found that many of the Chinese dongles say they have the prolific PL2303 chipset but either don’t or have a counterfeit chipset that does not work. 

 

Things used to work but then stopped. Two issues, low speed (45 baud) and 5 bit, make it a jump ball as to whether a given usb/rs232 adapter will work

 

This drove me crazy so I ended up using computers with real RS-232 serial ports.

Thanks for your input.  In my experience, these USB to serial dongles do not support 5-bit data.  I think the USARTS, in the early PC cards were based on the old Zilog design that could be set in almost any way by the drivers.  Software like Heavy Metal would work just fine on these dionsaurs, but not the new dongles.

Are XR-2211 chips still available?  They make a very simple AFSK 
decoder. It is a 14 pin DIP IC and with a few Rs & Cs will give you an 
AFSK decoder. (you don't need any limiter or selectivity coming off 
ITTY) Then just add an optocoupler to interface with the TTY loop.

If you you manage to get MMTTY to  output to a serial port, don't worry 
about ASCII  conversion. MMTTY will output in 5-bit.

For a serial port, look for an old Win 7 or XP laptop.
