And now, a response from someone who lived on a ranch...

I used peanut butter too but found that sometimes the
rats could trip the trap without getting caught.

Here's what I did:

Get three red bricks: the kind used for houses, etc.

Take the three bricks and arrange them like this:  I_I
(a box with an open end).

Put the trap in there so that the trigger is by the opening.

The rat can only get at the peanut butter from one side - the open one.

If he climbs over the bricks, add a second level.

I also found that rats like Swiss cheese but could sometimes manage
to pull the cheese off the trap without tripping it. Wrapping
dental floss around the trigger and cheese took care of that problem.
