I have forgotten why detergent is not a good idea for most
machine oil use. I think it depends on being hot to work but
don't remember where I got that. Its possible it gells up with
time.
There is some useful information at:
<https://www.valvoline.com/about-us/faq/oil-types-weights-and-viscosity-faq>
Valvoline is the other brand that my racing friends
recommended beside Castrol but is not castor oil.
I also looked up Castor Oil:
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castor_oil>
There is some history of Castrol at:
<https://www.motorsportmagazine.com/archive/article/july-2000/55/castrol-r>
It appears from the Castrol main site that most of their
engine oils are conventional petroleum or synthetic oils.
It seems the special conditiions faced by oil in internal
combustion engines, high heat and exposure to fuel and its
reaction products, are not the same as in general machine
lubrication such as a Teletype machine. What is good for one may
be not good for the other.
More, on additives including detergents at:
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_additive>
Still more at:
<https://itstillruns.com/synthetic-blend-oil-benefits-6962057.html>
Is it possible the oil industry has set out to confuse you?
If you do a search for industrial lubricants you will find a
whole nother bunch of confusion.
