ASCII machines do not necessarily have a smaller physical form factor. 
If you are thinking of the Model 33 which is popular for computer 
interface, there is a Model 32 which is very similar to the 33 except 
that it only has three rows of keys and uses Baudot code instead of ASCII.

For heavy duty machines there is the Model 35 for ASCII which is 
comparable to the Model 28 for Baudot.

If you primary goal is interfacing to a computer, an ASCII machine will 
be much easier to work with.  If you are actually interested in RTTY 
(radio Teletype) then a Baudot machine would be more useful.
