IIRC, the maintenance manuals tell you how many turns to wind the spring drum.

I strongly suggest you carefully lift the flat
carriage return ribbon metal tab on the end
off the post, holding it with narrow nose pliers;
then slip a paper clip thru the hole, and fasten
the paper clip on something on the left that is
stable. This will prevent the spring spool from
totally unwinding -- it will take you forever to get
the spring spool wound to the proper tension for
good carriage return if you just let it unwind.
