There's a version of the firmware (i think jordan has it too) that lets 
you send a special character over the USB interface (i believe I used 
"%" since it's not in ITA-2) to switch to config mode, rather than 
having to use the button.  Of course, it'd also be easy to tack a couple 
of wires across the button to bring it out externally, which would be 
pretty convenient .
