As a child, I had a synchronous motor that I used to start by (with the AC power off) winding a yard of string around the shaft.  Then switch on the power and pull like you'd pull to start a lawn mower.  I didn't know what the extra wires were for.  Later, when I learned more about motors, I understood that they were for the capacitor and starting winding.  By that time, the motor in question was long gone.
