Yes the telephone Pioneers did do conversion work to turn machines
into Teletypes for the deaf.
Basically if the machine had been converted in this manner it will not
follow Teletype wiring diagrams.
The recommended is to discard all non needed wiring.
The wiring for the deaf TTY are all direct the Keyboard plug goes to
the keyboard and NOTHING ELSE.
Same goes for the Selector Coils the wires are direct to terminals on
the coils and NOTHING ELSE
the Motor is wired to the plug and an on off switch.
Thats its! Super simple.

The Modem took care of the loop power and in some cases would turn the
motor on also.
