It's interesting that one Bernard Howard received all the patents for
MITE. There is a little biography of him in Western Union Technical
Review. Seems he had some experience in the aerospace industry. But we
have no history of him being in the teleprinter business before or after
MITE Corp. And it's amazing if he invented the whole MITE teleprinter
product with no background in the business.
There was an article by Gordon Eliot White in his Surplus Sidelights
column in CQ magazine (but I can't find the issue number or date)
where he wrote about the cost of government stuff and tells a sordid
story of how MITE attempted unsuccessfully to get a no-bid contract
for their machine, and perhaps bribed a U.S. senator to help them win
the contract when it was out for bid.
Teletype made a batch of machines that were intended to compete with
MITE, but, not getting the contract, didn't do anything more with the
design. Although elements of it showed up in the Model 32/33 line.
