[GreenKeys] Tape Reader Power Resistor

Hi all,

it's me again with the latest issue on my Model 33 restoration. The last thing is the tape reader, which seems to be working except the solenoid is not actuating... It turns out that the big 850 ohm 'electrohm' power resistor is bad (see picture).  It's reading as open-circuit. Does anyone know where I can find a replacement? I did a cursory search of my usual (UK) component suppliers and 850 ohm doesn't even seem to be a common value, let alone available in high power. I'm not sure what the power rating of this resistor is, or really even what kind of resistor it is... Is it a wirewound? It looks similar to wirewound resistors, but in a 'squashed' form factor.  In fact, now that I inspect it closer I'm pretty sure it is a wirewound and I think what has happened is a winding has opened up and someone in the past tried to repair it by putting a solder blob over the affected spot...  Does anyone know if this resistor is available anywhere currently, or of a modern equivalent? Or a spare one that they could send me?  If there isn't anything available in this form factor I might have to adapt a more modern resistor.... If I have to do that, what sort of power rating would I need - I don't see the actual power rating on this thing, but it has got to be 50-100w.  I'd much prefer an original part rather than a hacked job though, so that's a last resort.

Though, the wires connecting to this power resistor seem really small actually...  I don't see how they could possibly deliver enough current to warrant a resistor of this magnitude.

Thanks,
 Troy.
