Speaking of ancient print technologies, LDX must have had several meanings.

The very first laser printer was the LDX (Long Distance Xerography). The folks at Xerox who thought it up thought they'd developed a high-speed fax machine, hence the name and acronym. The people at Carnegie-Mellon University hooked it up to a computer and started using it to do what they hoped was letter quality printing. It wasn't quite that good, I think it was, at best, 200 DPI resolution. Still, around 1972, they began using it to typeset books. The result was so spectacularly better than any other computer printer that the books were successful, and so poor that Xerox was motivated to put significant work into getting better resolution.
