Interesting! I had never heard of "knocker uppers." In the past, people
were able to stay in one profession throughout their career. There would
likely be some new skills learned along the way, but not often a sudden
change mid-career. For example, in my 50 years of work, I started with
vacuum tubes, then transistors, then integrated circuits, then
microprocessors and software. I was able to make adjustments along the
way. The application of automation to many jobs reminds me of the book
Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut. In that, piano players were automated out
of jobs. It's been a long time since I read the book, but as I recall, the
only employment left after automation took most jobs was managers and
engineers.
