[GreenKeys] Old ideas recycled - Cardwell

Enclosed is a picture of the AWA's "Cardwell" printer.  It is a model
212C  The company name was "American Telegraph-Typewriter and was
developed by Dr. George A. Cardwell.

It was a 6-bit system with bipolar signalling. The printer was all
solenoid-driven (no motor) and was said to be able to print as fast as
one cold type.  The type cylinder is in the center, but hard so see. Our
unit has a tag that says "Adjusted & oiled; 6/17/8" (1908!)

Apparently Dr. Cardwell was overzealous in selling his stock and was
convicted of stock fraud and fined $2000 in 1915.  His son, Allen D.
Cardwell, was more successful, starting the Cardwell Capacitor company
and developing the BC-221 frequency meter.

have fun,
