I sent this separately to someone, but I’m also posting it for the group for any discussion or thoughts (if needed):
Full synthetic 5w-40 high mileage motor oil (they do make the high mileage stuff for that weight now) is what I use for all of the oiling and cleaning. I’ve tried diluted mineral spirits combined with sewing machine oil (or something - can’t remember anymore) to get things unstuck, but it can be harsh on the metal. The thing that I’ve found with the full synthetic and what’s nice about it is the detergent. Get a small oil can with a needle-tipped end and douse any stuck parts with it. The motor oil will get in the cracks of the caked-on stuff and eventually break it apart. Also, the motor oil wicks into small cracks between frozen metal parts and helps loosen them up.
Now the TT manuals do call for grease in some areas, but I still to the motor oil… probably bad advice but it hasn’t failed me yet. The motor oil will fly if freshly applied when the machine is on, but I also see it as protecting the metal from rust.
My two cents anyways :) .
