My solution to this problem is here, search for "Motor Unit":

I had a very similar situation, removing and cleaning various parts
led to cracked motor wiring; in my case, I noticed not because I saw
the cracks, but because it started tripping the GFCI. I disassembled
the motor far enough to remove the rotor and get to the ends of the
winding, and covered over with shrink tubing. It's not a perfect fix
(it's kind of ugly, and the insulation lashed into motor the windings
is just as brittle -- if less mobile), but a decade or so later that
TTY is still running strong -- it's now in my office on campus, and I
demo the Model 28 for students or other faculty members a few times a
semester.

It's not as bad as you think!
