Very nice! A LOT of work! Imagine designing and building such a ship at
that time. Lots of work with a slide rule! They truly did amazing things.
This reminds me of the shipyards in Richmond CA (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richmond_Shipyards ). My father had an
electronic manufacturing company in Richmond, so I spent a lot of time
there. My brother also worked for a while in a shipyard there welding
plates onto the hulls of ships. Note in the Wikipedia article that it says
the hulls in Richmond were welded while the hackaday article says the
hulls were riveted and later caulked.

Again, they did amazing stuff. One of my nephews is now a marine engineer.
It appears he mostly designs shore structures. He did work on the design
of the new San Francisco bay bridge (after the big earthquake). My sister
calls it "Jack's bridge."
