Just another thought-
If you use a timing light, I have found that some trigger on a rising edge,
some on a falling edge, so just experiment.

An automotive timing light with a function generator driving in place of the
inductive pickup would be great, especially since you can aim it at the
problem. The are available very inexpensively on eBay or swap meets, the GR
Strobotacs use an insanely expensive xenon lamp of their own design. (I
believe they are now known as Quad Tech or GenRad). I have a couple of
Strobotacs, but I really don't want to part with them.
I would bet you can find a good xenon timing light with an inductive pickup
(don't get a direct connect, it needs a HV trigger) for somewhere between
free and ten bucks.

You can make a jerry-rig strobe with your work bench function generator & a
high brightness LED on a long wire. You DO have a function generator on your
work bench, right? :-)
