I had the pleasure of knowing George a bit between a handful of long and enjoyable phone calls and once in person when he dropped off a trailer of teletype equipment (part of that large set he was trying to unload that Paul mentioned). He had endless stories between his adventures aboard a Navy submarine, his family, and of course his long tenure as a teletype tech (not sure of his official title) for the western or maybe it was northwestern US region (the titular character from my "Cain and Abel" Halloween story was partly inspired by him and his description of his work). I wish I could have sat him down to tell all his life stories into a microphone to get them down in his own words; from my small window's view into it, it's clear to me that his was a rich, full life worth living. He knew his craft, too-- I'll never forget how I described a selector issue I was having on my Model 19, and he instantly said "what happens when you rap the handle of a screwdriver against the rangefinder?", and when I tried it and told him it caused the mainshaft to skip, he knew it was a worn trip latch.

Anyway, he was a good member of GreenKeys, a good ham, a good friend, a good man, and he will be missed. RIP George, and a final 73 to you.

I had the pleasure to get to know George many years ago, and visited him several times in Sequim Washington. He also visited me at least two times in Arvada, Colorado.

He knew more about teletypes, especially the model 28 range, than anybody else I have ever met. He had a pile of Teletypes, at one point must have been 50 or so, at his house, and in his later years, he struggled to give them away.
