I recall a system like that being used in J. C. Penny stores, back
when that company was made up of smaller stores in smaller towns.
The carrier was hand-powered.  The sales clerk had to pull hard
enough on a handle to propel the carrier to the cashiers located
above the show windows in front.  I guess that put the cash handling
into a place where robbers would have a hard time getting in and out.

kinds.  Desk-fax, automobile fax, fax vending machines, all swept away
by the more recent generation of customer-owned fax machines operating
over the public telephone network.
