Lots of high-speed photoelectric paper-tape readers worked that way.  I've got an old IOMEC reader that has a capstan and pinch roller to move the tape (very fast, no sprocket anywhere), an electromagnetic brake to stop it (on a dime) and 9 channels of photocells, the sprocket cell serving as strobe.  It shows its age because it uses a single incandescent bulb to illuminate all tape channels where a design from after about 1972 would have used one LED per channel.

Pathetic.  That's the kind of error AI tends to make.  Look at AI generated pictures of ski lifts, locomotives or military uniforms and you see similar errors.  Ski lifts with support pylons blocking the moving cabins, locomotives with random or even missing linkages to the driving wheels, or a guy in a uniform with 3 stars on his shoulder and sergeant's stripes on the sleeve, with combat medals from World War I and Desert Storm.  Today's AIs seem to have no concept of meaning or function, just surface level looks.
