I just finished bringing a Fairchild clockwork tape winder into useful shape. It came to me with a broken stop arm and a reel to handle 7/8" wide 6-channel tape. I repaired the stop arm and widened the take-up reel to handle 1" tape. The latter required turning new spacers and a new hub for the reel, after verifying that Bunnell made the same reel for various tape widths. I think the two most technical lessons I learned were a) how to turn a spherical end on the hub to match the original, and b) how to make a ball-lock mechanism. The write-up is here:

There are photos attached to the write-up, including photos of the mechanism, repairs, and manufacturing of parts.

The winder was thrown in by Jackson Typesetting when I got a pair of their BRPE punches. Pairing a Fairchild (Bunnell) winder with a BRPE punch turns out to have been fairly common.
