When the volume of waiting tapes was less than 
about two dozen, there is a device with a block 
magnet and what looks like a heavy duty spring 
attached to the magnet.  The magnet clings to 
the equipment cabinet, of course; and the tapes 
are slipped into the space between the coil turns... 
works really well if the tapes are rolled up using 
the clever "twisty" method between thumb and 
forefinger ! 

I use one now on my desk to slip in paper notes.  :)
