Hi Ken,
Many thanks for your interest in the Viking II "C-C" transmitter here...!
Well, in a nutshell, all I did to "...wash the mud" out of my audio was to
increase the cathode bypass capacitors at both 6AU6 audio stages (I simply
inserted the biggest electolytics I had on hand---about 100 ufd. each---in
parallel with the existing caps), I replaced the coupling cap between the
6AU6's with a 0.01 ufd. ceramic unit, I increased the screen bypass cap on
the first 6AU6, and I I REMOVED the paralleled caps located at the
secondaries of the inter-stage audio driver transformer, AS WELL AS the
final modulation transformer...
Lastly, I replaced my CRYSTAL D-104 mic element, with a stock CERAMIC
element (yes, Astatic apparaently made BOTH kinds)...this latter unit seems
to have more output. I now run my audio gain at about the #2 level on the
mic level control...
One last thing---I have yet to try this, but an interested party suggested
REPLACING the 0.005 ufd. plate choke bypass caps to the 2x6146 finals, with
2 kv 0.001 units...this should "preserve" the highs in the audio which might
ordinarily be bypassed to ground...
I hope this might answer your query---and my sincerest of apologies for not
having shared this info with the group earlier...it really is a SWELL bunch
of guys here, that subscribe to this list...!
