Mike, I think in all cases you are extending the effective height of the
antenna with respect to the ground. Did you try touching the natural radio
antenna to any of the trees? Think you will also see an increase there. The
tree acts as a very tall antenna even though it's not too conductive and
actually has a ground that reduces the signal.
