Looks like you guys have plenty of good ideas already.  I just wanted to 
point out Lyle K0LR's use of a PTC thermistor alone in his (now obsolete 
in favor of the ZL1BPU LF exciter ... but that's another story :)  
"All-in-one" synthesized LowFER transmitter.

Check out the clock reference portion of the circuit.  He is using a 
crystal here, and solders the thermistor to the can.  But he also mentions 
using epoxy or your favorite adhesive.  He has a good description.

I'm fairly certain he used this for very slow QRSS and was stable enough 
for that.

I haven't tried this, but was considering it for my own wandering hifer.  
Instead of the mitten he mentions for the xtal I was considering a small 
foam block with cavity carved out to stick over the oscillator and epoxied 
thermistor to fit snug against the board.

Please let us know what you end up doing.
