Hmmm, yeah that does suprise me. But I do not have a 706; I have an ICOM
718. And it does very well. If you wish to have a reasonably good HF
transceiver for other uses, atleast consider one. For the price, which is
often just over $500 during sales and promotions, I am happy. Very good
stability and clean TX for my digital modes. Sensitivity is so-so on LF and
very adequate everywhere else. I hear the west coast Loran very well<G> and
some of the 25 watt NDB stations in the 200-400 kHz region around the west.
Using a piece of wire that rates somewhere between god-awful and
you're-not-serious, are-you as an LF antenna. Somewhere I have (I think ;-)
some Argo plots of a cold start against WWVL for 12hrs. If you wish, I will
look for them.
Now the downside....if you want to run Argo on 185.300, you can't go up on
7070 and run psk31 or mfsk16 in the evenings<G>
