Oops. Hit the wrong button.

Ed,

The AN/ARC-5 (whose time had really passed before it ever went into service)
was a later development of the earlier A.R.C. set whose design life started at
about the same time as that of the BC-191 (the BC-375 was a later development
of the BC-191). But the original A.R.C. design was for a low power (12-15
watt output) set for short range plane to plane communication to replace the
earlier SCR-183/283 and GF/RU series (which A.R.C. also built). The BC-191 and
later BC-375 were long range liasion sets comparable to the GO, GP, ATC and ATD.
Just like the heavy Navy shipboard 24/7 transmitters like the TBL, TBK, TBS,
etc., had a different design requirement from the intermittent duty short
range sets like the TBY, TCS and MBF. When you compare apples and avocados
you're apt to get a strange taste.
