I think we've kinda done that empirically here, and it's not practical at any usable 
distance.
I also note, that the hype about this, at least in the US, seems to have been in
the first year of the war. I don't think i've seen any ads touting this past 1943,
maybe even 1942. Which also coincides with the period of high shipping losses
to U-boats. I also note that i have read that in the first year of the war, that is,
1939 for U.K., and 1942 for the USA, the olde ship regen receivers in place were
replaced ( many with just newer regens ). Many of those olde receivers were
really basic, just a detector and 1 stage "note intensifier". (  British terminology ).

The first time i saw a DAU and its HF model, the DAQ ( i think that's how it goes ),
i immediately dismissed it as all weight and a not very impressive receiver. The
bandspread + tuning rate is awful. Maybe that was actually a help for what it
had to do, go to a frequency in a hurry.  -Hue Miller
