to be no alternative.

Plenty of alternatives, Ben. I have excellent results trading with and
selling to friends and folks with similar interests, maybe 50/50 split
between online and offline. Ebay has its place just like the
classifieds, yard sales, etc.

As far as selling each part of a station separately, this isn't new.
It's gone on since ebay started and will no doubt continue. Sometimes
it's out of greed, no doubt. Funny thing is, if it's a desirable set
up, they'd probably get more money for a complete station. So in the
case of actual greed being the motivator, the seller is likely his own
worst enemy.

More often though, I see folks who clearly have little, if any idea
what they have or are selling list items this way. They buy it at a
yard sale, estate sale, auction, or uncle Bob leaves it to them. I
asked one seller if they had the power supply needed for the radio and
described it. Their response was that they had seen something like
that on a shelf in the garage, but didn't bother with it because they
didn't know it went with the radio. Biggest clue is 'this takes a
funny plug' or something along those lines, with no reserve and a low
starting bid.

As John pointed out, someone who needs one piece is quite happy to buy
just what they need. And of course, you should never bid on anything
if you're afraid you'll get 'stuck' with it, or with only the piece
you win.

Basically, it comes down to what you want to pay. If you're looking
for a cheap deal on a desirable item, ebay is probably not your best
bet. When it comes to luck on ebay, you buy your own through the
amount you bid.
