[Milsurplus] TBY-8 batteries

Strewth! What did I say to earn that tirade? Firstly, I am in the UK, as a
glance at my signature will show. Secondly, the local refuse sites here are
run as recycling businesses and have facilities for hazardous waste such as
L/A batteries. If I take the innards of a TBY battery in there in a
purloined piece of the XYLs Tupperware and say this needs the same handling
as a small car battery that has broken open, the attitude will be - "shove
it over there, mate, along with them old car batteries". I will not be
arrested, hand-cuffed, my house surrounded by Jack Bauer and his "24" team
nor will I be otherwise treated as a criminal due to my possession of
hazardous material. Is that how the authorities behave in your neck of the
woods? If so, they need to watch less TV and get a life. The authorities
here have enough on their hands dealing with Jeep-loads of real nutters with
IEDs to worry about me and a pint of L/A sludge. (Unless I carry it into the
local mosque, of course, then watch out!).
The operatives of my local site will certainly not demand to see what other
hazwaste I'm in possession of so the issue, genuine or otherwise, of my
having radio gear with dodgy paintwork will not arise. Yes, we have Health &
Safety anal-retentives here too backed not only by UK but, much worse, by EU
legislation! If you involve them then you will get a world of grief. So,
better to use common sense, even if it is something that the "HSE
professionals" and lawyers deny the existence of.
Your comments on the preservation aspect noted; that is a sensible
observation and one I have taken on board, given your long experience of
milsurplus issues - although you could have given your opinion in a less
confrontational way, maybe?
73,
Roger Basford/G3VKM - Norfolk, England.
