Most of the Willard cells were nothing more than lead/acid
cells.  No more harmful than car batteries, handled properly.
Usually they are all dried up and sulfated with not a lot of aciditiy
left in them.

Gel cells would be proper substitute, sealed and last a LOT
longer, and still rechargable. They can be obtained in a varity
of sizes/amperage and voltage.

Willard cells used in a LOT of mil stuff. The "Pogo stick"
xcvr, not sure of its SCR/BC number, used them, had one about
40 years ago, never did get it to work.  Ran off of 4V, 2 cells,
but they ones I had were DED also.
