Found it! The track of the volume control pot is intermittent. When this
goes
o/c, it removes the return path that sets the potential on the voice
detector
diode anode to (approximately) the same as that on the 6R7 cathode, in
effect turning off the diode. Also found that a new(?) Arcturus 6R7 is much
hotter than the one that was originally in place.

Since I imagine the pots are pure unobtanium, I will just have to remember
to wiggle the pot when the sound goes away.

The audio is somewhat distorted, so I will be visiting the components in
the audio chain soon.
