This is very true.  The original GF (I think up to the GF-1/RU-3) and
the SCR-A*-183 up to the AC version were based on the A.R.C. Type B
sets.  After the Airmail Disaster of 1934, ARC started work on what
would eventually become the Type K superheterodynes which, in turn,
became the RAT*, RAV, ARA/ATA et al.  In the meantime, though, they
redesigned the Type B sets creating the Type D ones with a more
powerful transmitter and an improved receiver.  The nomenclature
remained the same despite being essentially new designs in the
original cases.

The redesigned sets must have worked pretty well since a number of
them remained in service through a good portion of the war.
