Which brings to mind this question: were there special weather-reporting
aircraft patrols, or was weather reporting combined with other routine
patrol and search missions? Why i am wondering, years ago i heard in
a series on Radio Australia, "Codebreaker Extraordinaire", about coded
messages from "Japanese weather planes" (or similar designation)
being decoded by Australians.
The same concerns about weather predicting in those days makes
me have reservations about the quote i previously sent about the
non-importance of the coast watchers. Coast watchers would still
be important for weather reporting, and in fact many of the SACO
Navy-Chinese weather reporting radio stations in China were
exactly the answer to that need. Plus, even breaking the high-level
codes would not tell you how many enemy guarded their base at
a certain time, or when a truck left a base.
