Hi, Mike et al
The problem I have with the R-24 (and R-23) is the restoration of the
loop connectors which were missing on the ARA and the SCR-274-N
receivers. If there wasn't some intent to use them then they wouldn't
have been added. The key word here is "intent". What actually
happened is quite another thing.
The primary purpose was very likely as its predecessors, with the
ZB/ARR-1, however not everywhere had either a YG or an Adcock range
station but there were LF/MF NDBs and broadcast stations made really
good beacons themselves. Again, I'm talking about intent, not actual
use.
Use with the MF ARC-5 transmitters ... well, I remember a few of those
discussions and, like similar ones related to the ART-13, there was
little resolved. The manuals handle those transmitters like the rest
of the series rather than as anything special so that's precisely the
approach I'll be taking. They existed (though not in any great
quantity), they were used and that's that.
>From what I've read, the only reason the Army got into the ARR-1
business in the first place was to use those facilities to find their
way home in the Pacific Theater. Once it was in place, they
apparently didn't see any need to upgrade to the ARR-2 in later
aircraft.
Best regards,
Michael
