Not certain it is correct but an old retired USAF radio tech told me (back
in the 70s) that the first B 58s used a Univac ERA antenna tuner which was
in a pressurized long semi cylindrical container. It had a vacuum variable
and fast turning rotary inductor. Powered by 400 cycle AC. He couldnt recall
an AN or CU designation, he just remembered it as the ERA. He said it used
tubes and was very reliable. Said it tuned much faster then the 490Ts. He
thought they upgraded to a different tuner later. He was stationed in Texas.
Seemed odd to me because the ERA was really outdated, had been used in B 36s
and B 52s with the ARC 21 and ARC 65 SSB xcvrs.
