That's a real wierdo, never seen anything like it before. 
For what it's worth, my thoughts are as follows :- 
I would say it's some kind of home brew special experimental type. The 201 base was probably taken from a dud 201 as a convenient way of providing a filament connection. Because of the distance between the filament and what are the anodes I reckon it was meant to be be gas filled as was shown in the last pic. 
So my guess is a home brew Hg vapour rectifier with scope seeing the effect of plate size on internal resistance. 
[Later comment] ...thinking about it some more. If you connected an 866 filament to a 1 Amp supply not much would happen. If they could connect the filament to a charged lead/acid cell (2 Volts and not current limited) and see if any Hg condenses on the glass.
