I thought I would make you fellows jealous with my monthly report to our
Old Friends group. This is not a club with a president, dues, etc, just a
bunch of guys that started meeting about 29 years ago on 75 meters, first
on 3810 and now 3715. Based primarily in NC/SC, it meets 3 times a week on
the air, and once a month for lunch at the Golden Corral in Spartanburg,
SC. We have 50 officially on the roster, 12 to 18 check in on the net,
sometimes lower, sometimes higher, as many as 25 a few times. We have
folks that drive from Myrtle Beach, SC and Atlanta Ga to get here.
Depending on the number of check-ins on the net, we can go around at least
twice in our round table format in our allotted hour, but we do run over at
times. Milsurp is present with up to 5 ART 13's a couple SCR 274N setups,
TCS, plus other less known, up to 5 Johnson 500's, bunches of Heathkit,
Geloso, WRL, Knight kit, AMECO, Babcock, of course Collins like 32V and
KWS-1's, and many other odd AM rigs from the 1930's onward. In the parking
lot afterward, we have had a mini-hamfest, with gear changing hands every
time. I sold a nice DX100B/SX100 station, and picked up a couple National
RCE RX's, one from the Coast Guard. The pix with the burned up radio,
Carl, W4RCW took a lightning hit about 10 years ago that came down his
chimney, started a fire that burned his home to the ground. He lost so
many family keepsakes, including some of the finest restored ham and
milsurp gear ever. He has been in replacement mode ever since. Don't
know if the pix will display but here is the the report:

*31 folks made the trek to the font of all abundance, the Golden Corral
today. 6 wives endured ham radio testosterone and somehow enjoyed their
lunch. The now famous Golden Corral hamfest did not fail to perform
either, several pieces of quality gear changing hands, and some not so
quality. Somebody missed out on a really good deal on an NC303 and an
75A2. Give Stan, W4KR a call if you changed you mind on the ride home.
Our DX today was Cliff, WB4NKL and Chuck, K4IYQ from TN, and an early OF
who had checked in years ago, Lawson, W4EMF made the trek from Charlotte,
his new home. The cook came out of the kitchen wanting to know where John
(KZ4B) was, he had a bumper crop of chicken livers that nobody wanted.
Carl's Lightning Arrestor Superstore has the fine example of what happens
when lighting hits and burns down your house. A little car polish and a
new resistor here and there and it will be good as new. Sorry for the poor
quality mostly back of heads pix, I was running really late, misjudging how
long it would take to load my truck and forgot to grab my camera.*

*For all those that were there and those not who have not been on the net,
try and get on 3715 on one of the 3 days we meet and pop in and say hello.
Those whiz bang solid state rigs can sound almost as good as a real boat
anchor with a tweak on the equalizer and turn up the mic gain.*

*Charlie, W4MEC*
