Subject: [MMRCG] Speculations on ground radios and the GRC-14
...
As stated, have never had the opportunity to work on or use the R-808/GRC-14 so they may be Dogs, cannot speculate on that directly having no firsthand experience so have to go on others statements.
----
I have had three R-808/GRC-14 receivers, many years ago.
All of them were mechanically unstable, but the fix was easy.
In one, there was wire wrapped around a tube socket terminal
which had not been soldered. Grid of the local oscillator if I remember
correctly.
The other two:
The 808 has a large RF module one accesses with the rig upside-down
on the bench. It comes out as an assembly. Couple of wires have to
be manually removed, but most connections are made through
plug-and-socket connectors on the assembly. Look at it closely
and you'll see how it comes apart. Pay attention to the main
tuning shaft and the BFO shaft so they go back together properly.
In both cases, all I did was remove the module and re-seat it.
End of problem.
If today, I'd wipe the connectors with some De-Ox-It.
I really liked the repaired 808 (except that it weighs a LOT).
Stable, very sensitive, and that looooong tuning slide.
I gave one away, traded one and left the last when I moved to Nevada.
Couldn't take it on the bus.
Wish I had kept one. I'm a sucker for big receivers.
