   I assume you are referring to the kind of antenna that MFJ sells as a 
"Hi "Q" loop" if so, all mysteries have been revealed.  I like mine.
   MFJ makes two versions, 40 - ? and like mine 9 - 33 MHz.

   I feel it is just about like a dipole, except when horizontally 
polarized it is omni-directional.  (less gain)
