By "volume control" I meant a small, inexpensive carbon pot of
the physical form of those often used for that function.  I 
forgot to mention that a linear taper would be preferable to the 
log taper of the typical "volume control".  Sorry for any 
confusion.

The modification uses a small linear taper carbon pot as a 
voltage divider feeding a TV horizontal output transistor 
configured as an emitter follower.  Most of the heat
dissipation is then in the transistor instead of the pot.
