Welcome, Preston, there are a lot of helpful guys on this list so don't be shy about asking questions.

Bill's comments are on the money. Once you know what you want the receiver to do, the folks in here can give you sound advice as to what sets are best suited for you. This, in turn, can help you avoid dead ends and detours.

Another issue is whether you want a plug-and-play set or whether you want the challenge of restoring an old set. Do you like tinkering?

As to where to get boatanchors, hamfests, ham clubs and radio-collector swapmeets are always a good source. The ads on www.qth.com and www.qrz.com often list nice sets. Now and then, you can find something good on craigslist. Don't ignore the classified ads on www.antiqueradios.com. Remember the classified ads in your local newspaper.

Here's a link that will help you identify the hamfests and swapmeets in your area:

Good luck and good hunting!!

>You might want to expand on your request a bit and specify just what you will be doing with your first boatanchor receiver, that is: just SWLing, primarily for CW, primarily for AM ham use, good freq readout, etc. There are a lot of boatanchor receivers out there, some are great and some are not. And prices vary accordingly. Also, you may need to do some work on your choice depending on condx...tell us more.
