Great Post Singal 500!!!!
Of course the other question would be or perhaps assumption should be "How
do you communicate with your office?" -- The answer most likely would be
cellphone and text messaging!!!! Investigative agencies overall have less
need to use radios for communications and use cellphones as the primary
communications device. In my area generally USPS Inspectors may use the
radio when they are mobile just to tell dispatch they are mobile & than when
they arrive at their destination they will also call in to dispatch to let
them know they will be out of the vehicle. Other than that, the radio comms
are sparse. Approximately 2 to 3 years ago they had a raid in the
Northampton MA area involving an individual that was receiving children's
pornography and when they executed the warrant discovered some pipe bomb
were being manufactured. At that time I did monitor some other than
"routine" activity. Additionally last year the Bulk Mail Sorting Facility
in Springfield MA had a hazmat exercise and the radio system repeater was
active at that time. There also was an indication that USPS has regional
special "evidence & removal" team that are sent into the building to remove
hazmat material. The team was using simplex operation. So it is possible
that simplex operations may be used car/car or portable/portable more often
than using the repeater. Here in the New England area, I get the impression
that repeaters are tied into one another with an investigative zone (which
is normally by state).
As a side note, at work I always talk with our US Postal delivery personnel,
and noticed that even though they park the delivery vehicle on a flat
parking area, they still chock the back wheel. So I asked one of them
about this and was told that at times the Postal Inspectors run surveillance
on them and chocking the wheels (as well as locking the truck if you are
going to be, I believe 10 feet away or the truck isn't in under constant
view of the driver).
