I would like to propose that we call our Autostart Net the "Irv Hoff,
W6FFC Memorial Autostart Net".
Many of you on this list will remember Irv Hoff, W6FFC ex K8DKC as one
of the most enthusiastic and helpful supporters of RTTY and autostart.
He helped hundreds of us get RTTY autostart stations on the air, made
arrangements for hundreds of people to be able to buy Model 28 machines
through a special purchase he arranged with the Bell system. Along with
Keith Petersen, he made major contributions to the science of RTTY with
the development of the Mainline TTL and TTL-2 terminal units, the ST-3.
ST-5, and ST-6 terminal units. He spent thousands of hours on the air
helping beginners, like myself, get started in RTTY and was a steadfast
advocate of using the mechanical machines. He once confessed to me that
his greatest worry was that computer RTTY would kill teletype as we new
it. In a sense, he was prophetic in that statement as computer based
RTTY has essentially replaced most mechanical machines for RTTY on the
airways today. Irv had an ongoing love affair with the mechanical
machines, particularly the Model 28. He could type at machine speed on
a Model 28 at 100 wpm all day and never hit a wrong key. It was
beautiful to see and hear.
Irv was also a successful Captain for United Airlines but his first love
and primary focus in life was teletype. He was taken from us at far too
young an age by cancer and the RTTY community has greatly suffered at
his loss. I guarantee you that if Irv was still alive, we wouldn't be
talking about the demise of RTTY on the Ham bands. He would have two or
three autostart groups running on mechanical machines as we speak.
He would have been an active participant on the Greenkeys list if he was
still with us. His devotion to RTTY and particularly to the use of
mechanical teletype machines along with the great service he gave to the
RTTY and Teletype community in general in popularizing our hobby and
helping others, makes calling our new Autostart Net, which we are
starting to keep the mechanical teletype machines alive and in use,
"The Irv Hoff, W6FFC memorial Autostart Net" highly appropriate in my
judgment. I would like to make this last gesture of thanks to a great
individual.
What say the rest of the Greenkeys Group ??
