A few years back I was attending the annual Oshkosh weeklong flyin. A clever
young man was making his way thru the various vendors purchasing big ticket
items using phony personnal checks he had printed by a custom check printing
company. The checks proudly displayed a photo of his "recently completed
custom hombuilt" (read expensive) ,complete with the "N" number registration
on the fuselage side. He "talked the talk" with the various sellers, and
displayed a drivers license matching the check address. I was helping a
friend sell his wares and became suspect after seeing him buy expensive gear
over a period of a few days thru chance encounter. I asked a vendor to show
me his check, then proceeded to the FAA tower on the field where a friend
was working the flightline, and ran the "N" number thru the database. Yep
,bogus, big time. The Wisconsin police were notified and set a trap for him
after I and others gave them his description. Long and short-caught with
girlfriend accomplice- over $14k in bad paper- wanted in three states-
ultimate disposition of case unknown. Yes you can damn near duplicate
anything. Seller beware!!! Rick K8PJQ----- Original Message -----
