Bob,

I suggest filing the edge flat and using a small drill make a small  
hole in the edge and thread a machine screw in to replace the stud.
If you are satisfied with the position of the screw you can add some  
super glue gel or JB Plastik epoxy to keep it strong.

The first move is to compare the bit patterns for the keys you are
pressing with those for the characters you are getting.  It may be
that a single bit is coming up wrong, which narrows down where you
have to look.
