(Others suggested various cleaning compounds and elbow grease,
to force off caked on real grease).
I'd suggest a totally different tack, which I've used with great success
in removing old caked on grease:
Use a lightweight OIL first. After all, water and oil don't mix, but
oil and oil DO. Given simple cooking oils or even WD-40,
rubbing in some lighter oil "thins out" the grease first, allowing it
to be easily brushed and wiped off, without requiring excessive force.
After all of the grease is gone, THEN gently use an oil-removing
cleaner to touch it up, for repainting.
We regularly use this trick in Scouts, to get caked on grease off
of hands, without tearing layers of your hide off... <grin>
You simply pour a touch of cooking oil first onto your hands
and gently do a hand washing motion (use an old, soft toothbrush
for under the nails). This breaks up and separates all of the
grease from the hands, and nails. Wipe off with a rag or
paper towel, then wash hands normally. Easy breezy...
BTW... A similar trick of simply using cooking oil, or spraying on
some PAM (or any other spray cooking oil) quickly deactivates
bandaid adhesives, and duct tape accidentally stuck to the
skin and/or hair. It just falls off. <grin> (Ever notice that
band-aids don't stick to oily skin?)
Bottom line - thin and wipe off 90%+ of the grease first with light oil,
THEN use a degreasing cleaner on it.
