Jeff,
we are working on a modification of our software (firmware)
to connect also 60WPM machines without the TW39 dialler unit.
The (for our network needed) answerback is emulated by software
on the board.
But this makes it necessary to switch (auto start) the motor somehow
when a call comes in.
If a machines has such an idle line timer installed, as all my USTTY
machines have surprisingly, the modification can be done only by software.
For machines without such a timer there will be also need of a hardware
modification to switch the motor with a relay.
But anyway, an original Telex machine is still first choice in operation.
Die "dual mode" board as you call it emulates a teleprinter at one port
of the board.
You can operate it with a terminal software at the serial port. But is
stand alone
and receives and stores also messages without any computer/terminal
connected.
