Brake fluids contain esters, chemicals that are related to alcohols. It
attacks any form of lacquer coating quite viciously. I spent a great
deal of time in my youth working at my father's garage. We dispensed
brake fluid from gallon cans with large rubber squeeze bulbs, and while
carrying them to and from a vehicle, exercised great care not to spill
it on painted surfaces.
